Rufus Reed, ex-British Special Forces and now a successful author living in the United States, is drugged, kidnapped, falsely accused of terrorism and “disappeared” to a secret CIA “Black Site” in Northern Europe. He’s to be broken “by any means possible”. But nothing is quite what it seems, and Reed is no ordinary prisoner. Subjected to increasingly harsh treatment, Rufus uses all his former training in counterterrorism and psychological warfare to play a dangerous 'cat-and-mouse' game with his captors. As some of them develop a growing respect for his intelligence and humanity they are horrified at the possibility that they are all pawns in a larger more insidious game is being played out by right wing extremists to ensure ‘their man’ wins the Presidency of the United States.
But could ‘their own’ really betray them? As a government conspiracy unravels and they grapple with the unthinkable, the moves and countermoves of competing forces explode onto the world stage. From a small Irish village to the Port of Al-Aqabah, the White House to the Israeli Knesset and top echelons of the Vatican, events escalate at an unnerving pace until a mind-bending twist propels the action to a dramatic and unexpected conclusion.
Drawing on the author’s own experiences in the military and as the son of a British MI6 operative living in different countries, cultures and political systems around the world, this “controversial”, “politically provocative”, “can't put the book down” political thriller tackles highly controversial issues and disturbing decisions in history from 1948 to the present, the far reaching consequences of which, we are still dealing with today.
Book length: 356 pages
This political thriller is superbly written and for much of it the reader could be forgiven for thinking he or she had picked up the latest from Le Carré… If you like thrillers with a difference, ones that make you think long and hard about the modern world, An Unquiet American is well worth reading.
AFN Clarke's superior storytelling encapsulates the horrors of the dark side of our Democracy with real world events that few authors could hope to capture. This is a must read!
An Unquiet American is riveting, thought provoking, "can't put the book down" reading. AFN Clarke's writing draws me in and keeps me captivated until the very end. Intense, passionate, intelligent writing. Don't miss this!
I could have believed this was a true story. The author certainly challenges us to look between the lines and in our hearts for what's happening when an administration pursues its own hidden agendas. Highly recommended.
I loved it - frightening how much of this is true - thrilling read. Couldn't put it down and recommend this political thriller.
I'm a lover of historical fiction and this is a book I loved and couldn't put down. The characters were well written and timely.
